Journalist Killed by Armed Robbers in Daylight Attack

An Ibadan-based journalist, Ojo Peter, was shot and killed by suspected armed robbers in broad daylight along the Molete–Oke Ado axis of Ibadan. The incident occurred on August 18, 2025, and was initially mistaken for a health-related issue until Ojo’s younger brother, Enahoro Peter, revealed that he was attacked over a cross bag he was carrying.

Eyewitnesses told the family that Ojo was shot in the back despite shouting that the bag contained no money. Ojo, a former reporter with Parrot Extra who later joined Daily Monitor, was widely mourned following the announcement of his death by the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on September 7.

Enahoro Peter said the family was contacted by the police at Orita Challenge Division after the attack, noting that Ojo had left home in perfect health before being gunned down while trying to make ends meet. The journalist’s damaged phone was recovered at the scene, which helped authorities reach the family.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that one suspect was arrested while another reportedly died during a confrontation with officers. Spokesperson CSP Adewale Osifeso said the suspects, linked to multiple robberies in Ibadan, were intercepted with a motorcycle around Imolefalafia. One suspect resisted arrest and was fatally injured, while the other is in custody. Both were connected to another robbery and shooting incident at Anfani Junction on the same day.

Osifeso said investigations are ongoing and promised to provide further updates as the case develops.
