Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer
Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, according to a statement released by his office on Sunday. The 82-year-old was reportedly seen by doctors last week after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. Following an evaluation, a prostate nodule was discovered, and he was officially diagnosed on Friday.
The cancer has been characterized by a Gleason score of 9, indicating a Grade Group 5 tumor, which is among the most serious classifications. It has metastasized to his bones, but doctors noted the disease appears to be hormone-sensitive, meaning it can be effectively managed with the appropriate treatment.
Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.
The former president had previously withdrawn from the 2024 U.S. presidential race due to growing concerns about his age and health, paving the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee. Biden remains the oldest person ever to serve as president in U.S. history.
In recent years, Biden has faced other health challenges. In 2023, he had a basal cell carcinoma — a common type of skin cancer — removed from his chest. In 2021, he underwent a procedure to remove a benign but potentially pre-cancerous polyp from his colon.
