Israel Struck by Missiles as Iran Launches Retaliatory Attack Over Nuclear Site Strikes
Tensions between Israel and Iran reached a new peak on Friday as Iranian missiles struck Israeli territory in retaliation for recent Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and senior military figures. According to the Associated Press, air raid sirens rang out across the country, with residents ordered into bomb shelters amid multiple incoming missile alerts. Israeli media aired images of smoke plumes rising over Tel Aviv following what appeared to be a direct strike. The Israeli military confirmed that dozens of missiles were launched, though no casualties have been officially reported at this time.
Iran’s response comes after a series of Israeli airstrikes reportedly targeted military and nuclear sites in Tehran and other Iranian cities, resulting in fatalities, including several high-ranking individuals described by Iran as national defenders. In a strongly worded statement posted on its official X account, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Israeli attacks, accusing the “Zionist regime” of violating Iran’s sovereignty and committing what it called a “blatant act of aggression.” The statement declared that the assault had led to the deaths of both military personnel and civilians.
Describing the Israeli actions as a breach of international law, the ministry cited Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity of any state. Iran asserted its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the Charter and signalled that further retaliation could follow.
“The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to defend Iran’s sovereignty with full strength and in the manner they deem appropriate,” the statement read.
Iran also called on the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action in response to what it labelled a threat to international peace and security. The ministry appealed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and urged Islamic nations and members of the Non-Aligned Movement to collectively condemn the Israeli strike and take urgent steps to de-escalate the crisis.
Iran ended its statement with a warning that any further consequences of the conflict would fall squarely on Israel and its allies, saying, “The grave and far-reaching consequences of the Zionist regime’s aggression against our beloved homeland, Iran, will rest entirely upon this regime and its supporters.”
