Iran’s President and Foreign Minister Killed in Helicopter Crash
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, 63, has died in a helicopter crash, according to Iranian news outlets. The crash, which also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and seven other senior officials, occurred in the mountainous northwest region of Iran.
Rescue teams located the wreckage on Monday after a challenging search hindered by heavy fog and harsh weather conditions. The helicopter went down weeks after Iran launched a drone-and-missile attack on Israel in retaliation for a deadly strike on its diplomatic compound in Damascus.
President Raisi, a hardliner who assumed office in 2021 following a historically uncompetitive election, was previously the nation’s chief justice. His tenure saw increased repression of dissent amid youth-led protests against clerical rule. Raisi was considered the second-most powerful figure in Iran after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Following the president’s death, the Iranian Constitution stipulates that the first vice president will assume office with the Supreme Leader’s approval. The incident has thrown Iran into a state of uncertainty, with the Supreme Leader urging calm and assuring that the country’s leadership remains stable.
“We hope that Almighty God will bring our dear president and his companions back in full health into the arms of the nation,” Khamenei said in a televised address as the nation prayed for Raisi’s safe return before the tragic confirmation of his death.
The international community, including Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Russia, Turkey, and the European Union, expressed concern and offered assistance in the search and rescue operations. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanani, thanked these nations and organizations for their support.
Initial reports indicated that one of the three helicopters in Raisi’s convoy crashed in the Jolfa region. Despite the harsh weather and dense fog, a massive search effort involving more than 60 rescue teams, search dogs, and drones was launched to find the crash site.
State television first reported the accident in the afternoon, emphasizing the difficulties faced by rescue teams due to the weather. Iran’s Red Crescent chief, Pirhossein Koolivand, stated that identifying the crash site was challenging, and Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi confirmed the helicopter made a hard landing in bad weather, complicating communication efforts.
An emergency cabinet meeting was held, led by Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, following the incident. Meanwhile, Raisi’s convoy had included three helicopters, with the other two reaching their destination safely, according to the Tasnim news agency.
