Iran Confirms Armed Forces Chief of Staff Killed in U.S.–Israeli Strikes

Iran has confirmed that Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, was killed in coordinated air strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, state television reported on Sunday.

According to the official broadcast, Mousavi was among several senior military figures targeted during what Iranian authorities described as a Defence Council meeting. The report also named Iran’s defence minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Pakpour, and National Security Council official Ali Shamkhani as casualties.

The strikes mark a severe blow to Iran’s military leadership, raising concerns about the country’s internal command structure and its capacity to respond to further escalation. Analysts warn that the deaths of these top commanders could have long-term implications for Iran’s defence strategy and regional influence.

Following the attacks, Iranian forces reportedly launched retaliatory missile strikes against U.S. bases and allied positions in the region. The incidents have intensified fears of a wider conflict and drawn strong reactions from governments and international organisations.

The U.S. has indicated that its campaign will continue until key Iranian military leadership is neutralised, while global observers call for diplomatic efforts to prevent further deterioration of security in the Middle East.

The death of Mousavi, a pivotal figure in Iran’s military hierarchy, has sent shockwaves through Tehran and attracted widespread international attention. The coming days are expected to be critical in determining the direction of Iran’s defence posture and regional stability.
