INEC to Resume Nationwide Voter Registration in February 2025
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to resume the nationwide continuous voter registration (CVR) in February 2025. The registration process will initially begin at the Local Government Area (LGA) level and later expand to include Registration Areas (RA).
In a memo dated November 20, 2024, INEC’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, directed Resident Electoral Commissioners to begin preparations for the upcoming exercise. She requested details on the status of INEC’s voter enrolment devices (IVED), printers, and the availability of registration materials. Additionally, the memo asked state offices to identify and select staff who will serve as voter registration officials and to compile information on uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) to aid in printing the register for display during the exercise.
This move comes after the suspension of the CVR in July 2022 ahead of the 2023 general election. However, INEC did conduct voter registration in states with off-cycle elections during that period.
