INEC: Nigerians Writing us to Recall Federal, State Lawmakers
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a notable increase in requests from Nigerians seeking the recall of their federal and state legislators. The commission has also updated its Regulations and Guidelines for the recall process involving both lawmakers and Area Council councillors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Mr. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee at INEC, disclosed this information following the commission’s management meeting on Thursday. He highlighted that some groups have requested INEC to initiate recall procedures on their behalf. However, Olumekun clarified that the recall process must be initiated by voters within a constituency, with INEC tasked only with implementing the request in accordance with relevant constitutional and legal provisions.
In addition to handling these recall requests, INEC is also finalizing preparations for the upcoming Edo State governorship election on Saturday. The updated 10-page regulations and guidelines document has been made available on the INEC website and social media platforms to aid prospective petitioners and inform the public. Olumekun encouraged constituents to adhere to these guidelines when preparing and submitting their recall petitions.
