INEC Clarifies 2027 Election Dates, Signals Possible Review Over Holiday Conflicts
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has outlined the schedule for the 2027 General Election, addressing concerns that the dates could overlap with national holidays.
In a statement released on February 13, 2026, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, explained that the timetable aligns with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s own regulations.
Under rules effective since 2019, presidential and National Assembly elections are set for the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections follow two weeks later. Accordingly, INEC has scheduled:
Saturday, February 20, 2027 – Presidential and National Assembly elections
Saturday, March 6, 2027 – Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections
Acknowledging stakeholder concerns about potential clashes with national observances, INEC said it is reviewing the timetable and may consult the legislature for adjustments, while remaining within constitutional and statutory limits.
The Commission emphasized its commitment to conducting transparent, inclusive, and credible elections and promised to update the public on any changes.
