INEC postpones nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after 2027 polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general election.
The decision was reached during a meeting held on Friday, April 10, 2026, between the commission and resident electoral commissioners (RECs), according to a statement issued by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee.
INEC said the exercise, originally proposed as part of its electoral preparations, will now take place after the next general election cycle.
The commission described the voter revalidation process as central to maintaining a credible and up-to-date national register. It is intended to verify existing voter records, correct personal data, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and allow registered voters to confirm and update their details where necessary.
Despite the postponement, INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting elections that are free, fair, credible, and inclusive.
