“INEC Bowed to Government Pressure” — ADC Rejects Electoral Body’s Position on Leadership Dispute

The faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark has rejected the stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the party’s leadership dispute, accusing the electoral body of acting under political influence.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi criticised INEC’s interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal ruling, describing it as flawed and inconsistent.

Abdullahi alleged that the commission’s decision was shaped by pressure from the federal government, which he claimed is uneasy about the party’s growing political presence.

He said INEC’s position contradicts both the facts of the case and logical reasoning, adding that the party would respond formally after reviewing its options.

The ADC also called on its members and supporters to remain calm while the situation unfolds, expressing confidence in its political trajectory.

INEC had earlier announced that it would no longer recognise either the David Mark-led faction or the group aligned with Rafiu Bala. The commission said it would suspend engagement with both sides—including meetings, congresses, and conventions—pending the resolution of the matter before the Federal High Court.

The electoral body also disclosed plans to remove David Mark’s name from its official portal, citing its interpretation of the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on March 12.

The dispute stems from a legal challenge filed by Rafiu Bala, who contested the legitimacy of the caretaker committee led by Mark after it assumed control of the party’s National Working Committee.
