INEC Announces February 3, 2024, as Election Day for Bye-Elections, Re-Run Elections Across Nigeria
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially set Saturday, February 3, 2024, as the date for conducting bye-elections and court-ordered re-run elections nationwide.
This announcement comes as the electoral body encourages political parties and their candidates to diligently follow the outlined timelines, ensuring a smooth and orderly electoral process. The directive was outlined in a statement issued on Friday by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information Voter Education Committee at INEC.
The approved Timetable and Schedule of Activities will govern the conduct of bye-elections resulting from the resignation or demise of Members of the National and State Houses of Assembly. The statement clarifies that the vacancies were officially declared by the Presiding Officers, including the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Speakers of State Houses of Assembly.
Highlighting the scope of the upcoming elections, the statement specifies that the affected constituencies span two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies, encompassing nine States of the Federation.
Additionally, INEC is set to oversee re-run elections mandated by various Election Petition Appeal Tribunals following the 2023 General Election. A total of 35 Constituencies are impacted by these court-ordered elections, with three covering entire constituencies and the remainder involving specific Polling Units.
In a bid to provide transparency and accessibility, the electoral commission has uploaded the Timetable for the elections, complete with detailed delimitation data, onto their website and social media platforms. This information serves as a guide for political parties and candidates, as well as for public awareness.
INEC emphasizes the importance of strict adherence to the specified timelines, urging cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the successful and seamless conduct of these significant elections on Saturday, February 3, 2024.
