Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Imo State governorship, faced a harrowing attack on Saturday when his convoy was ambushed by armed assailants in the Ikeduru Local Government Area. The incident, occurring around 5 pm, saw Anyanwu’s convoy targeted from multiple directions, resulting in injuries to some of his aides and extensive damage to the convoy vehicles, as depicted in videos circulating online.
While managing to evade the attackers, Senator Anyanwu addressed the press, vehemently calling for the cancellation of the ongoing election. He accused INEC and security forces of failing in their duty to ensure a free and fair electoral process, alleging that the security agents safeguarded INEC staff while members of the APC manipulated the election results. Anyanwu further asserted that evidence, including an ID card belonging to a member of the House of Assembly, indicated foul play and urged INEC to consider the available proof to annul the election results in the affected regions.
The call for cancellation and the exposure of alleged malpractice intensifies the tension surrounding the Imo State gubernatorial election, raising concerns about the electoral process’s integrity and the safety of candidates and their teams.
