Imo State Government Responds to Arrest of Assailants of NLC President
In the wake of the arrest of individuals involved in the assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Imo State Government issues a response.
The Imo State Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, clarified that no government officials were among the suspects arrested in connection with the assault on Joe Ajaero. Ajaero, leading a strike, had accused the Imo State Government of orchestrating the attack.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, Commissioner Emelumba stated, “I will say emphatically that the government has no hands in that attack. The governor has also regretted the attack; he feels bad that he (Ajaero) was treated that way.”
Emelumba emphasized that the arrested suspects were not affiliated with the state government. He further dispelled rumors involving one of the governor’s aides, stating, “The governor’s aide was not involved. I can tell you categorically. He wasn’t even around Imo State that day; these are figments of imagination. No government official was involved, and this is verifiable.”
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, had confirmed the arrest of suspects related to the assault on Ajaero, assuring ongoing police investigations into the matter.
Following intervention from the NSA, the NLC subsequently called off its strike.
