Imo Communities, Amurie Omanze, Oboro Amurie, Unite to Abolish Caste Systems
In a historic move set to usher in positive change, two communities in Imo State, Amurie Omanze and Oboro Amurie, located in Isu Local Government Area, have declared their intent to abolish the oppressive Osu, Ohu, Ume, and Diala Caste systems. This significant decision, slated for implementation in January 2024, aims to eliminate the marginalization of certain community members, often unjustly deemed as outcasts.
The groundbreaking announcement was made through a statement released by Mrs. Chinyere Oge-Kalu, the Executive Director of Pillars of Hope Africa Initiative (POHAI). Mrs. Oge-Kalu highlighted that the culmination of efforts leading to this bold move can be attributed to years of relentless advocacy by the National Human Rights Commission and various nongovernmental agencies.
Expressing confidence in the ripple effect, Mrs. Oge-Kalu anticipates that not only will more communities follow suit, but also envisions the eventual eradication of these reprehensible caste systems across the entire Imo State and Igboland.
Commending the proactive stance taken by Amurie Ancient Kingdom, encompassing Amurie Omanze and Oboro Amurie, Mrs. Oge-Kalu specifically acknowledged the traditional rulers and the people for their pivotal role in spearheading the abolition of Osu, Ohu, Ume, and Diala Caste systems. This courageous move is seen as setting a precedent for positive societal transformation in Igboland.
