“If Your Life or Community Is Under Threat, Avoid Preachers Telling You to Rely on God” – Nigerian Catholic Priest Warns Amid Benue Killings
In response to the recent deadly attacks in Benue State, Nigerian Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Angelo Chidi Unegbu has urged communities facing violence to reject calls from religious leaders advising them to depend solely on divine protection.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the priest reacted to reports that more than 200 people were killed in a two-day assault by suspected herdsmen. He expressed concern over the role some preachers play in discouraging people from taking action to defend themselves.
“I have seen some posts where preachers are assuring those whose lives and property are being attacked to rely on God for protection,” he wrote. “According to them, the people should fold their hands and wait for God to miraculously fight for them. Of course, your aggressors love such preachers because they are knowingly or unknowingly helping them to achieve their agenda.”
Fr. Unegbu emphasized that in times of crisis, people must act with unity and strategy. “If your life or community is under threat, avoid such posts and preachers,” he warned. “This is the law of common sense. It is the time to strategize and consult. Anyone who advises you otherwise belongs to the camp of the enemy. There is strength in unity.”
He acknowledged the role of faith but cautioned against blind reliance on external salvation. “In times of insecurity of lives and property, never rely on the ‘messiah’ that does not live in you,” he said. “Does God no longer answer prayers or what is the essence of religious beliefs? We shall answer this question when I return from my break next month. For now, protect your life. Ndụ bụ isi (Life is key).”
