“I Will NOT Attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg” – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that he will not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, citing concerns over the host country’s policies.

In a post on his personal X account (formerly Twitter), Rubio stated that his primary responsibility is to protect and advance American interests, not to support what he described as “anti-Americanism.” He criticized South Africa for expropriating private property and using the G20 platform to promote “solidarity, equality, and sustainability,” which he equated with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies and climate change initiatives.

The G20 Summit is a major global economic forum, bringing together leaders from the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, African Union, and other nations to discuss international economic cooperation. South Africa is set to host the summit from November 22 to 23, 2025, while the U.S. will host the 2026 edition.

Rubio’s decision aligns with broader tensions between the U.S. and South Africa. Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. government previously announced plans to withhold funding from South Africa, accusing the country of “confiscating” land and mistreating certain groups.
