“I Was Sleeping When He Hit Me”: Sister of Onitsha Trader Killed by Apprentice Speaks from Hospital

Ogechukwu Success Nwite, sister of Onitsha trader Ikechukwu Nwite, has described the terrifying moment her brother was killed by his apprentice.

The suspect, Chiemerie Anieka, allegedly attacked Nwite with a pestle at the family home on No. 2 Enyiuko Street, Fegge, on February 16, 2026.

Ogechukwu told the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) that she was asleep when she felt a heavy blow to her head. The attacker struck her again, and when he raised a pistol, she managed to wrestle it away and escape, running outside to call for help.

It was only then that she realized her brother had been assaulted and was lying unconscious in the kitchen.

Currently receiving treatment at a hospital, Ogechukwu said Anieka had lived and worked with her brother for three years. She added that there had been no serious conflicts between them, aside from a recent reprimand at the shop, and expressed shock that such a minor dispute could escalate to murder.

Family sources noted that Ogechukwu has been restricted from internet access as she has yet to be formally informed of her brother’s death.

Chiemerie Anieka is in police custody, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation.
