I Was Offered N5 Billion to Move Motion for Fubara’s Impeachment – Ehie
Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that he was offered a N5 billion bribe to support the governor’s impeachment while serving as Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Ehie claimed to have evidence of the bribery attempt stored on his phone. He stated that in early October 2023, he was approached with the offer but refused to take part in the alleged scheme. To protect himself, he said he had printed and distributed the evidence in case of any threats to his safety.
Ehie also emphasized that Governor Fubara had chosen the path of dialogue and conflict resolution in handling political disputes, rather than escalating tensions.
The crisis in Rivers State escalated on October 29, 2023, when an explosion rocked the state Assembly complex, signaling a deepening rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The following day, Speaker of the House Martin Amaewhule and 26 lawmakers loyal to Wike suspended Ehie and three other lawmakers aligned with Fubara, accusing them of involvement in the explosion. The lawmakers also moved to impeach Governor Fubara, citing allegations of abuse of power and gross misconduct.
However, the impeachment attempt was ultimately thwarted by supporters of the governor, preventing further action against him.
