“I Remain Lagos House Speaker” – Obasa Denies Corruption Allegations, Questions Impeachment

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed the corruption allegations that led to his impeachment, calling them “fictitious and unsubstantiated.” Speaking at a welcome rally at his residence in Ikeja on Saturday, Obasa insisted that he remains the rightful speaker and that due process was not followed in his removal.

Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house over alleged misconduct, claimed that the process was orchestrated while he was out of the country. He accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of aiding his removal, alleging that security agents, led by the police commissioner, invaded the assembly complex and his residences in Agege and Ikeja. He said over 200 officers were involved, locking his family indoors.

Dismissing accusations of misappropriation, Obasa mocked claims that a gate construction project under his leadership cost N16 billion, asking, “Is it the wall of Jericho?” He maintained that he had no fear of being removed but insisted that the proper procedure was not followed.

“I am not afraid of being removed, after all, it is not my father’s chieftaincy title. I am representing my people, and they have returned me six times,” he said. “If you want to do anything, do it well.”

The former speaker recalled past leadership changes in the Lagos Assembly, citing the removal of ex-speaker Jokotola Pelumi and former deputy speaker Adefunmilayo Tejuosho. He argued that their removals did not involve police intervention, unlike his case.

Obasa stressed that an innocent person should not be discredited without concrete evidence and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Assembly’s standards. He expressed gratitude to the Lagos Governance Advisory Council and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, describing the governor as his brother.

Following Obasa’s impeachment, his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the new speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in Lagos State.
