“I realised I was attracted to women 10 years into my marriage” — Uju Anya
Uju Anya, a Nigerian-born professor based in the United States, has said she became aware of her attraction to women ten years into her marriage to her former husband.
Speaking in an interview on *WithChude*, Anya said her marriage was genuine and emotionally fulfilling, dismissing suggestions that it was insincere.
“It was not a fake marriage,” she said. “I was genuinely in love and excited about the relationship.”
Anya described the marriage as satisfying but explained that, over time, she came to a clearer understanding of her sexuality. She said this realisation came about a decade into the marriage, with the knowledge and support of her then-husband.
She added that she later found love with Dr Sirry Alang, whom she described as her partner and spouse. According to Anya, their union is focused on building a blended family rather than marriage alone.
“We did not just get married; we blended a family,” she said.
Anya and Alang got engaged in March 2024 and married later that year. Both women had previously been married to men and have children from those marriages.
Anya is a lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States. She gained public attention in 2022 after a social media post about Queen Elizabeth II went viral.
Alang is a Cameroonian-American health services researcher and an associate professor of Sociology and Health, Medicine and Society at Lehigh University.
