Special Effects Expert Dies in Movie Set Explosion in Ogun
A special effects and pyrotechnics artist, James Akaie, has died following an explosion on a movie set in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Film producer and director James Abinibi confirmed the death in a statement posted on Instagram on Friday. He said the incident occurred as filming was concluding.
Akaie was known for his work on several Nollywood productions, including *Mai Martaba*, *The Night of June 7th*, *Dark October* and *Ireke*. He specialised in special effects makeup and pyrotechnics.
According to Abinibi, the explosion happened in an effects preparation area outside the main set during a filming session. He said Akaie was experimenting with an unauthorised pyrotechnic setup involving a gas cylinder, alongside two assistants, when the blast occurred.
Akaie sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two assistants suffered burns and were taken to a specialist hospital. Abinibi said they are in stable condition and receiving treatment.
“The specific circumstances leading to the explosion are currently under a thorough investigation by the relevant authorities,” Abinibi said, adding that the production team is cooperating fully while also conducting an internal review.
He described Akaie as a highly dedicated professional whose work consistently raised the quality of the projects he handled.
Abinibi appealed to the public to respect the privacy of Akaie’s family and the film crew as investigations continue, noting that further updates would be provided when appropriate.
Akaie’s final Instagram post, shared on January 11, read: “I have come again in the name of He that you can’t resist.”
