“I Nearly Withdrew from the 2023 Race Due to Economic Crisis” – Tinubu
President Tinubu has revealed that he nearly withdrew from the 2023 presidential race due to economic turmoil caused by the naira redesign policy. Speaking at a special Iftar at the State House in Abuja on his 73rd birthday, Tinubu recounted a conversation with a close relative that made him question his candidacy.
During the event, Tinubu expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their well-wishes and prayers. Former President Muhammadu Buhari, in a phone call, commended Tinubu’s leadership and reaffirmed his pride in their association. General Ibrahim Babangida also praised the President’s resilience and bold decisions, while state governors and political leaders extended their congratulations.
At the gathering, attended by top government officials, lawmakers, and diplomats, special prayers were held for the President. Tinubu recalled how a family member approached him during the campaign, lamenting the financial hardship caused by the cash shortage. Despite the discouragement, Tinubu remained determined to run.
Reflecting on his tenure so far, Tinubu noted the difficult but necessary decisions he has made, including the removal of fuel subsidies. He emphasized that leadership requires making tough choices for the nation’s future. Vice President Kashim Shettima commended the President’s sacrifices, stating that future leaders would benefit from his bold reforms.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other lawmakers praised Tinubu’s leadership, highlighting his strategic thinking and commitment to national development. State governors, including Hope Uzodimma of Imo and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra, lauded the President’s policies and governance style.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, credited Tinubu’s leadership for the military’s recent successes against terrorism. Religious and traditional leaders, including the Ooni of Ife, also offered prayers and praised the President’s contributions to democracy and national progress.
Former President Buhari acknowledged Tinubu’s role in shaping the All Progressives Congress (APC) and securing electoral victories. He urged Nigerians to continue supporting their leaders through prayers and unity. Babangida described Tinubu as a courageous leader whose governance innovations are crucial for Nigeria’s progress.
Governors from across the country, including Bassey Otu of Cross River and Ahmed Ododo of Kogi, emphasized Tinubu’s impact on economic growth and national stability. They pledged their support for his administration and wished him continued success in leading Nigeria.
As the event concluded, attendees reiterated their belief in Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to national development, highlighting his determination to navigate Nigeria through economic challenges and political reforms.
