“I Found a Dead Bat on My Bed After the Election” — Governor Okpebholo Reveals Spiritual Battle Behind Victory
Edo State’s newly inaugurated governor, Monday Okpebholo, has shared details of the intense spiritual struggles he endured leading up to his recent election victory. Speaking at a post-inauguration Thanksgiving Service held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Okpebholo attributed his win to divine intervention, relentless prayer, and steadfast support from the people.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo recounted a symbolic encounter that he believes demonstrated God’s presence in his life. The governor revealed that, on the morning following the election, he found a dead bat on his bed—an event he interpreted as a spiritual victory without any need for retaliation or force. “The spirit of God was there. The arrow of God, the hand of God delivered me,” he said.
Okpebholo, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the September 21 election, where he secured 291,667 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo, who received 247,274 votes. Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata placed third with 22,763 votes.
Reflecting on his campaign, Okpebholo emphasized that he relied solely on faith, without resorting to any traditional or spiritual consultations, underscoring his conviction in God’s protection. He advised Nigerians to trust in God through every challenge, reinforcing his belief that “with God, all things are possible.”
Prominent figures, including political leaders, artists, and clergy, attended the Thanksgiving event, joining Okpebholo in expressing gratitude and marking the beginning of his tenure as Edo State’s governor.
