“I Don’t Want to Be Remembered for My Many Fights” — Governor Obaseki
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki recently expressed that he does not wish to be remembered solely for the political battles that marked his tenure. Speaking after the inauguration of the Airport Road Parks and Garden in Benin City, Obaseki emphasized that his legacy should reflect his dedication to sustainable development projects for the state, rather than conflicts.
Obaseki highlighted steps his administration has taken to ensure the ongoing maintenance and sustainability of the garden, including a dedicated revenue model. “When we thought about these public spaces and how to manage them, we also created a revenue model to support them,” he stated. “Revenue from billboards around here, for instance, will contribute to their upkeep, with Prestige Hotel and local military forces also supporting the security and community needs.”
This statement comes amid recent controversy as four state officials were detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) just days before Obaseki is set to hand over power. The state government alleges that these arrests are an attempt to disrupt the transition process.
Governor Obaseki’s term has been characterized by several high-profile disputes, including conflicts with political figures in both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), his eventual shift from the APC to the PDP in 2020, and a turbulent relationship with his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Despite these challenges, Obaseki maintained that he would rather be remembered for his achievements than his conflicts, stating, “Certainly not for the fights.”
Reflecting on the support he has received from the public, Obaseki added, “I feel appreciated. The response from our people is commendable. I can’t be tired of saying thank you for the opportunity to serve.” With an emphasis on legacy and public service, Obaseki aims to leave Edo State with a foundation for sustainable growth, marked by completed projects and development initiatives that he believes will outlast his tenure.
