“I am Unstoppable,” Declares Shaibu
In a resolute declaration at the Bishop Kelly Centre, Benin, Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 governorship election under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party. Shaibu emphatically stated that nobody can impede his ambitious pursuit of the state’s top position.
During a live broadcast on Monday, the seasoned politician, with 30 years of political involvement, expressed his deep connection to the people, portraying himself as the “original home boy” capable of understanding and addressing the needs of Edo residents. Shaibu urged both the electorate and party members to support his candidacy, citing his extensive political experience and seven years of collaboration with Governor Godwin Obaseki.
“I just want to appreciate all of you. We have started the journey, and I decided together with all of us that after the consultation, we needed to make the answer to our consultation known to Edo people, and the answer is clear,” Shaibu stated confidently.
The deputy governor promised to deliver practical governance if elected in 2024, highlighting his achievements as a former House of Assembly member and federal lawmaker. Shaibu pledged to continue and strengthen Obaseki’s initiatives, especially in the agricultural sector, emphasizing a commitment to “hit the ground running.”
Shaibu’s announcement, originally scheduled at Eterno Hotel, faced obstacles as the venue was taken over by some allies of Governor Obaseki. Despite the hurdles, the deputy governor proceeded with the declaration at the Bishop Kelly Centre.
The rift between Shaibu and Governor Obaseki, evident in the relocation of Shaibu’s office outside the Government House, does not dampen Shaibu’s determination. His ambition aligns with a vision for “practical governance,” a sentiment he shared during consultations with politicians and the media.
In response to the skepticism surrounding his candidacy, Shaibu asserted, “Edo people are in dire need of practical governance, and we cannot afford to experiment again with someone who does not understand the politics and needs of Edo State.” He emphasized the importance of competence and experience in governance, rejecting the notion of experimenting with a new leader unfamiliar with the state’s dynamics.
As the political landscape in Edo State unfolds, Shaibu’s declaration sets the stage for a dynamic and closely watched 2024 governorship election.
