“I Am Not Against Coalition” — Peter Obi Clarifies Stance on Political Alliances
Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has stated that he is not opposed to political coalitions but insists they must prioritize the welfare of Nigerians.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Obi addressed what he described as a misrepresentation of his recent interview, where he was quoted as being against forming alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. He clarified that while he supports coalitions, he would not align with any group solely focused on seizing power without a clear vision for national progress.
“I have observed that my honest interview yesterday was misquoted by many media outlets, creating a false narrative that misrepresents my position,” Obi wrote. “Let me set the record straight: I am not against coalition. In truth, I am for it—not for power grab but to position Nigeria for greatness.”
Obi emphasized that any political alliance must be driven by the goal of improving governance and addressing critical issues such as access to quality healthcare, education, and poverty reduction. He warned against alliances formed purely for political control, arguing that such moves have historically led to governance failures that harm ordinary Nigerians.
“Too often in our nation’s history, individuals and groups have come together solely for the purpose of taking power for power’s sake,” he said. “Such endeavours, devoid of genuine purpose and vision, have only deepened our challenges, leaving the ordinary Nigerian to bear the brunt of bad governance. This is what I stand firmly against.”
He reiterated that leadership should be about service rather than self-interest, advocating for a system where justice, equity, and opportunities are accessible to all. He maintained that achieving a “New Nigeria” requires a shift in how power is perceived and utilized.
“It is not about grabbing it; it is about using it responsibly to transform lives and secure a brighter future for generations to come,” he added.
