How Sergeant Raped 17-Year-Old Suspect Inside Edo Police Station
A police officer, Sergeant Abraham Uzuobo, attached to the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, is currently facing disciplinary action after being accused of raping a 17-year-old female suspect detained at the South-Ibie Police Division.
The teenage girl had been detained on allegations of receiving stolen property. According to insiders, Sgt. Uzuobo allegedly took advantage of a brief absence by the duty officer, Inspector Edith Eduma, to gain access to the cell. He reportedly took the girl to the administrative department, where the assault occurred.
In a video reviewed by Daily Trust, the victim is seen lying on the floor, while Sgt. Uzuobo, caught with his pants down, hurriedly dressed as he argued with Inspector Eduma. The incident reportedly took place on October 10, 2024.
Inspector Eduma raised the alarm after noticing the cell key was missing upon her return. She eventually located Uzuobo and the girl in one of the station’s offices. Instead of immediately reporting the incident, Eduma is alleged to have contacted her husband and two other officers. She reportedly later accepted N45,000 from Uzuobo to cover up the incident and attempted to blackmail him for an additional N1 million to prevent the video from being leaked on social media.
Both Uzuobo and Eduma have since faced an orderly room trial and are expected to be dismissed from the force for their involvement in the scandal. The allegations of blackmail have also been documented in internal police correspondence.
When contacted, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, said he would issue a formal statement later, declining to confirm or deny the incident at the time of inquiry.
This disturbing case follows a similar incident in Lagos State, where another 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped inside the Ogudu Police Station. The Lagos victim was reportedly assaulted by an officer who had promised to help retrieve her stolen phone, luring her to the station under false pretenses. That officer was later arrested.
