Kwara State Police Dismiss Three Officers Over Murder of Polytechnic Student

 

 

The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three officers involved in the murder of Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The officers, Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, were found guilty of misconduct in connection with the tragic incident and are set to face prosecution.

 

Abdulqoyyum, an ND student in electronic engineering, was shot on September 4, 2024, while preparing for his sign-out ceremony in the GRA area of Ilorin. The killing sparked widespread outcry, with the Students Union Government and the institution’s management demanding justice for the deceased.

 

In a statement issued by DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, the police spokesperson, it was confirmed that after a thorough investigation and internal disciplinary proceedings, the officers were dismissed for leaving their assigned duties, corrupt practices, and unlawful use of authority. Their dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force took effect on October 4, 2024.

 

The statement also highlighted the commitment of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensuring justice and accountability within the force, especially in cases involving loss of life. Under his leadership, the police are determined to uphold professionalism and integrity among officers, with breaches of ethical conduct being met with decisive action.

 

Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya also extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. “We share in their grief and remain committed to supporting them during this difficult time,” he said. He urged the public to trust the legal process as the police continue to maintain law and order in Kwara State.

 

The statement concluded by assuring the public that justice had been served and thanked citizens for their cooperation during the investigation. The three dismissed officers will be arraigned in court in the coming days.
