How Police Officers Allegedly Extorted Over N150m From Land Speculator, IGP Orders Investigation

The Nigerian Police Force has launched an investigation into serious allegations of extortion involving some of its officers. A Lagos-based land speculator, known as “Ibile of Ibeju-Lekki,” claimed on TikTok that officers demanded N150 million on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to settle a land dispute in the Ibeku-Lekki area of Lagos State.

The claims, which have sparked widespread attention online, suggest that officers from Zone 2 Command in Onikan, Lagos, declared the land speculator wanted after he refused to provide the hefty sum. According to him, the money was purportedly for the IGP to resolve the case in his favor.

However, police sources have pushed back against these allegations, asserting that the land speculator’s accusations are a desperate attempt to avoid justice. Authorities claim that the man orchestrated the kidnapping and assault of Chief Dupe Damazio, the matriarch of the well-known Oni-Orisan family, over a land dispute. Following the incident, the family filed a complaint with Zone 2 Command, but the suspect allegedly ignored multiple summons, boasting that he was untouchable.

The situation escalated when the land speculator reportedly led an attack on police officers who had been sent to serve him with the invitation. After this confrontation, he took to social media, accusing the police of demanding the N150 million bribe.

In response, police authorities in Abuja have invited the man to come forward and substantiate his claims but said he has remained evasive. The police have vowed to arrest him and bring him to Abuja to face these accusations, as they suspect his boldness may be linked to alleged payments to high-ranking officers.

Meanwhile, the Oni-Orisan family has appealed to the Attorney General of Lagos State for urgent intervention in a related legal case. The family had previously won a judgment regarding land ownership at Oju Ota village, Oko Oni-Orisan, but claim that the verdict, as well as an official Lagos State Government gazette recognizing the land excision, has not been enforced.
