Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has revealed the heartbreaking final moments of legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away on Tuesday night. Obi shared his firsthand account of the tragic event in a post on his official X handle.

Onyeka Onwenu, a renowned Nigerian singer, died after performing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, in Lagos. According to Obi, Onwenu collapsed shortly after delivering a memorable performance, which included her iconic song “One Love Keep Us Together.”

Obi described the scene, stating, “I was present at the event where the iconic song star, Onyeka Onwenu, performed a couple of her songs ending up with her famous song, ‘One Love Keep Us Together’. It was a beautiful performance, but little did we know it would be her final bow.”

After her performance, Onwenu sat down, drank some water, and suddenly collapsed. Obi recounted how she was immediately rushed to a hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos, where medical personnel fought tirelessly to save her. Despite their valiant efforts over the course of two hours, Onwenu was pronounced dead.

“I followed her to the hospital. I watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff battled to save her life, doing everything possible to bring her back to life but eventually came out with the sad news that she was gone,” Obi shared.

In a poignant message, Obi expressed his deep sorrow and extended his condolences to Onwenu’s family, friends, and loved ones. “My heart goes out to her children and family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May we find the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss,” he added.
