How N8,000 Row Sparked Deadly Fight at Lagos Market

A quarrel over N8,000 turned deadly on Wednesday at the Mandillas section of Lagos Island’s Balogun Market, leaving one trader, Sodiq Ibrahim, dead and another, Ebuka Adindu, hospitalized and under police custody.

Eyewitnesses said the two men, who worked as “Oso Ahia” or market hustlers—those who attract customers to shops in exchange for commission—had brought in the same buyer to a store owner, who in turn gave them N8,000 to share. Disagreement over the sharing of the money sparked a heated fight that ended with Ibrahim being fatally stabbed.

Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Adindu stabbed Ibrahim during the altercation and then injured himself in the process. He was taken to a hospital under arrest and will face prosecution after recovery.

Though initial rumours on social media suggested the clash was fueled by ethnic rivalry, traders in the market strongly denied the claim, insisting it was purely a financial dispute. “It was just about commission. Others said the misunderstanding was isolated, with no tribal undertone, and noted that normal business activities resumed the following day.

According to another witness, Ibrahim reportedly struck first with a bottle before Adindu retaliated with a knife. The fight escalated so quickly that Ibrahim bled to death before help could reach him.

Traders emphasized that the incident was the first violent clash of its kind in years at the busy market and maintained that the Oso Ahia hustlers may no longer be welcomed following the tragedy.
