How JSS 3 Student Killed 23-Year-Old Man in Cross River

A Junior Secondary School student of Ugboro Secondary School in Bekwara Local Government Area, identified as Ogbeche, has been arrested for allegedly killing a 23-year-old man with a pestle.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the close of school in Ugboro when Ogbeche got into a fight with another student named Nicholas. The deceased, known as Oshen, tried to intervene and separate the fight, but Ogbeche, angered by what he perceived as bias, left the scuffle, picked up a heavy wooden pestle, and struck Oshen on the head.

An eyewitness, Lizzy, explained that despite calls from onlookers to drop the weapon, Ogbeche went ahead with the attack. She said the pestle, unlike the lighter ones often used in urban areas, was heavy enough to cause fatal injury with a single strike. Oshen collapsed from the blow and was rushed to a hospital in Ogoja, where he died later that night.

Community sources revealed that Ogbeche was notorious for frequent fights and had in the past attacked fellow students with dangerous objects, though no previous incident had led to death. The late Oshen was the son of the late Oshen Ushaka, one of the early wealthy figures in Bekwara.

Police confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody and is currently held at Ogoja prison.
