How Arsenal’s UCL Win Over Real Madrid Sparked Street Violence in Kano
Violence broke out in the Fagge area of Kano State on Wednesday night following Arsenal’s dramatic quarterfinal victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. The English side’s 2-1 win on the night, which secured a 5-1 aggregate triumph and their first semi-final appearance in 16 years, triggered tensions among rival football fans.
The celebratory mood among Arsenal supporters reportedly provoked outrage from Real Madrid fans, leading to a physical altercation in the streets. A viral Facebook video shared by user Mustapha Muhd Gujba Banker captured the chaos, showing young men from both sides involved in a heated fight. Punches were thrown, stones hurled, and loud shouting filled the air as the clash escalated.
Eyewitnesses said the confrontation began shortly after the final whistle, with taunting and banter spiraling into violence. As of Thursday morning, the Kano State Police Command had yet to release an official statement, and it remains unclear whether any arrests were made or if there were injuries.
