A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of twelve members of Jehovah’s Witnesses traveling from Anambra State to Agwa village in Imo State.
The crash occurred on Sunday around 9 p.m. along the Owerri–Onitsha Road, shortly after Njaba Bridge. According to police reports, the accident involved a gas tanker truck—marked “NUPENG” with registration number T 16716 LA—driving against traffic, and a commuter bus (registration ABB 79 BX) conveying the worshippers.
Spokesman for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, confirmed that 12 people died in the incident, including eight adults and four children. Eight others sustained injuries and were rushed to Divine Hospital, Awo-Omamma, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Ogbaku Mortuary.
The Police Commissioner, CP Aboki Danjuma, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. He further assured that traffic flow on the busy highway has been restored following the removal of the wreckage.
Okoye, in his statement, also cautioned motorists against reckless driving and called for strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies on the road.
