Hoodlums Rob BRT Passengers in Lagos, Vandalise Bus

A group of hoodlums attacked a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle in the Orile area of Lagos State on Tuesday afternoon, vandalising the bus and robbing its passengers. The incident occurred around 1 p.m., causing panic and chaos among commuters.

Dare Abiola, a passenger on the bus, described the ordeal. “I boarded a BRT bus from Mile 2 heading to CMS. When we got to the Odunade bus stop, we saw a large crowd. They were reportedly on their way to the Orile police station to confront officers who had recently conducted a raid on motorcyclists in the area,” he said.

The situation escalated as the bus reached Alafia bus stop near the NNPC fuel station. “The crowd became more aggressive. Some individuals started smashing the bus’s windshield and windows,” Abiola recounted. Passengers were robbed during the mayhem, and some sustained injuries. “They took my bag and phone, and threatened to stab me with a broken Trophy bottle if I didn’t comply,” Abiola added.

The robbery lasted for about 20 to 30 minutes, with no immediate response from the police. Following the incident, Abiola borrowed a phone from a local POS operator to contact his wife for financial assistance.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State police, confirmed the incident on Wednesday but noted that details were still being gathered.
