Military Moves In: Troops Deployed to Protect Northern Farms Amid Food Crisis
In response to escalating food insecurity and violence, the Nigerian military has initiated a significant deployment of troops across farms in the North-West and North-Central regions of the country. This measure aims to safeguard farmers from bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements.
The Defence Headquarters announced that the troop deployment, which began with the start of the rainy season, is intended to ensure a safe and productive planting season. This move is expected to enhance farmers’ access to their lands and promote a bumper harvest.
Maj Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, emphasized that the increased security presence is crucial for protecting farmers and ensuring a smooth planting process.
Farmers’ associations have welcomed the military intervention. Kabir Ibrahim, Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, commended the government’s efforts but urged for a more comprehensive approach to eradicating insecurity to achieve long-term food security. He expressed optimism that improved security will lead to better harvests, barring unforeseen weather-related issues.
Recent reports highlight the severity of the crisis: over 332 farmers were killed in the first quarter of this year, a stark increase from 128 during the same period last year. Moreover, farmers in the North have paid substantial levies to bandits, with estimates reaching N139 million.
Despite these efforts, there are discrepancies in the deployment of troops. In Benue State, Commissioner for Information, Matthew Abo, confirmed a lack of recent military presence. Similarly, officials in Kano State and Katsina State reported no troop deployments specifically for farm protection, though military activities are ongoing in other areas.
The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics has reported an unprecedented food inflation rate of 40.87%, exacerbating the urgency of the situation. The federal government’s initiative aims to address both the security and economic challenges facing the agricultural sector.
