Historic Milestone Achieved: Osun Community Celebrates Power Supply After 91-Year Wait
In a scene of jubilation and disbelief, Araromi-Okeodo, a community in Ife-South Local Government Area of Osun State, has finally received electricity after an excruciating 91-year wait. The euphoria that engulfed the town over the weekend was nothing short of a miracle, according to many of its residents.
Led by their revered monarch, Oba Abbas Akanbi, the Alara of Araromi-Okeodo, the community rejoiced as they witnessed the inauguration of a 50-kilowatt solar energy plant by Sholep Energy Limited. Oba Akanbi expressed his astonishment, stating that he had never thought he would witness such a momentous occasion in his lifetime.
“We have heard several stories about power supply to the community, which never materialized, and even when we were told of this solar power plant, we thought it was another fake promise. But today, I am the most fulfilled person worldwide. We, as a community, will ensure the sustainability of the plant and protect it adequately as a means of showing our gratitude. We are sure that the community will witness more growth and development,” he said.
Engr. Olalekan Adeleke, the Managing Director of Sholep Energy Limited, revealed that this multi-million naira project was made possible through funding from the company in collaboration with the World Bank and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) of the Federal Government. The off-grid power plant is expected to provide electricity to over 700 households, ensuring 24-hour uninterrupted power supply. Additionally, the plant will offer the community free access to a reliable water supply.
Adeyemi Festus, the Osun State Commissioner for Energy, disclosed the state’s commitment to collaborate with private investors to establish more power plants. This initiative aims to attract investment and boost development in the state. Governor Ademola Adeleke pledged to ensure the adequate security of the newly established power plant, further cementing the state’s dedication to improving the lives of its residents through access to essential services.
The electrification of Araromi-Okeodo serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of a community that, after nearly a century, can finally bask in the glow of modernity and progress. It is a historic milestone that marks the dawn of a brighter future for this Osun State community.
