Hisbah Arrests Over 600 in Kano During Sallah Enforcement Operations

The Kano State Hisbah Board says it detained more than 600 residents during the recent Sallah celebrations as part of a statewide enforcement campaign focused on public conduct.

The agency also reported that 66 children who were declared missing during the festivities were located and returned to their families.

Deputy Commander General, Mujahiddin Aminuddin, said the arrests followed alleged violations of dress and behavioral standards regarded as inconsistent with religious and cultural expectations.

According to the board, thousands of personnel were deployed across Kano to monitor activities throughout the holiday period.

A breakdown of the arrests shows that 275 young men were accused of “indecent” hairstyles, 286 women were detained over dress-related concerns, 85 tricycle operators were cited for carrying female passengers beside them, and 21 individuals were arrested for wearing shorts.

The board said additional cases were handled during the operation, including the arrest of a local government official found in a hotel with minors without parental consent. The children were later returned to their families after their parents were contacted.

Other incidents cited by the agency include a couple accused of violent conduct, a man alleged to have provided accommodation for activities described as immoral, and a trader reportedly found with weapons linked to thuggery.

Authorities also intervened in a traditional marriage conducted without the consent of the bride’s family, which the board described as unlawful.

In Sabon Gari, officials said they stopped a planned youth gathering, stating that such events often conflict with the code of conduct the agency enforces.

Aminuddin said the Sallah period should reflect religious observance and urged residents and business owners to comply with established norms. He added that the board would continue enforcement efforts and encouraged the public to report activities it considers suspicious.
