Heavy Security Presence as Supreme Court Deliberates President Tinubu’s Fate, Restricting Access for Media, Legal Professionals
In a highly anticipated decision today, the Supreme Court in Abuja is set to determine the fate of President Bola Tinubu, as well as the presidential candidates of the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party. This landmark judgment has prompted a significant increase in security measures, impacting the accessibility of lawyers and journalists covering the proceedings.
The atmosphere surrounding the Supreme Court is currently charged with the presence of an extensive deployment of security personnel, including officers from the Nigeria police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. These security agents have taken strict measures to secure the premises, which have resulted in the restriction of access for both lawyers and journalists.
It was learned that only a select few lawyers and journalists whose names are on an approved list will be granted entry to the courtroom. Many who attempted to gain access found themselves turned away by armed security operatives stationed at the various gates leading to the Supreme Court.
This heightened security posture has not only affected individuals attempting to attend the proceedings but has also led to temporary road closures near the Federal Secretariat and Force Headquarters, further preventing human and vehicular movements in the vicinity. As the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s judgment on the presidential election, the increased security measures and restrictions demonstrate the gravity and significance of this moment in Nigeria’s political landscape.
