Hamas Conflict: Germany Extends More Support to Israel
In a significant development following the recent surge in violence between Israel and Hamas, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has offered further support to Israel. This comes in response to the unprecedented killing of Israeli civilians by the Islamist militant group, Hamas.
Germany’s gesture of support was unveiled on Wednesday as the nation authorized Israel to deploy two of its Heron TP combat drones in operations targeting the Gaza Strip.
The German Ministry of Defence formally approved Israel’s request to utilize unmanned aerial vehicles in their ongoing efforts against Hamas. Notably, Germany’s armed forces, the Bundeswehr, currently lease five of these drones from the Israeli arms manufacturer responsible for their production.
At present, two of these drones are stationed in Israel, where German soldiers have been trained to operate them. In light of the recent developments, Israel has temporarily suspended the training of German pilots while these drones are reassigned to their new missions.
Minister Pistorius, speaking on the sidelines of a NATO defence ministers meeting, emphasized that should the situation deteriorate further, Israel would consult with its allies. Germany stands ready to provide assistance, including the delivery of humanitarian aid if requested by Israel.
Pistorius highlighted that Israel’s needs are primarily for political support rather than military or technical aid. The conflict between Hamas, the governing militant group in Gaza, and Israel escalated with a large-scale attack initiated by Hamas on Saturday. In response, Israel has continued to carry out airstrikes in the densely populated coastal enclave. The conflict has already claimed the lives of over 1,000 people on each side.
