Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers in Enugu Ambush, Steal Rifles
Two police officers were killed on Thursday night after gunmen attacked a patrol vehicle in Enugu State.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the Depot Police Detective College junction in Enugu, the state capital. The officers, attached to the Distress Response Squad (DRS) of the Enugu State Police Command, were on patrol when the assailants opened fire on their vehicle.
A police source confirmed that the patrol vehicle was set ablaze during the attack. One police inspector and one sergeant were killed, while their AK-47 rifles, each loaded with live ammunition, were taken by the attackers.
“The patrol vehicle was burnt, two officers were killed, and their rifles were carted away by yet unknown gunmen,” the source said.
The identities of the attackers remain unknown, and no arrests have been announced as of the time of filing this report.
Enugu State has recorded several violent incidents in recent months, reflecting a wider pattern of insecurity across the South-East. Security personnel, government facilities, and public officials have increasingly been targeted in armed attacks across the region.
The Nigerian government has previously blamed the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for similar attacks. However, the group has consistently denied involvement.
