Terror in Enugu: Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers, Set Patrol Vehicles Ablaze at Checkpoint
A deadly attack at a police checkpoint in Agbogugu, along the Enugu-Ozalla-Port Harcourt Old Road in Enugu State, has left two officers dead and two vehicles destroyed. The assault, which occurred on Thursday evening in Awgu Local Government Area, is believed to have been carried out by armed robbers.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen opened fire on the checkpoint, killing the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) and another officer known locally as “Big.” Following the killings, the attackers set fire to a police patrol van and a Sienna vehicle used for checkpoint operations. The vehicles were completely destroyed before the assailants made away with the officers’ weapons.
Sources said the attackers encountered little resistance and calmly drove through Agbogugu town after the assault. Police personnel from Enugu later arrived at the scene and removed the charred remains of the vehicles.
This attack adds to a troubling pattern of violence in Enugu State. In recent months, multiple killings—including those of police officers—have been reported across the Enugu North Senatorial District.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for comments were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages.
