Gunmen Kill Farmer, Two Sons in Ebonyi
A farmer and his two sons were brutally killed by suspected gunmen while working on their farm. The tragic discovery was made early yesterday after an overnight search by family members and locals, alarmed when the trio failed to return from their day’s work.
The yet-to-be-identified victims were found with severe injuries, indicating a violent attack. The Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that details were still emerging, with confirmation from the Ivo police division yet to be completed. However, the Ivo Local Government Chairman, Chief Emmanuel Ajah, has already ordered heightened security in response to the killings, aiming to prevent further violence.
Nkemkanma Kama, the representative for Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo federal constituency in the House of Representatives, expressed profound distress at the killings, condemning the act as “lawless” and a violation of the sanctity of human life. “This tragedy reflects the senseless violence that too often disrupts our communities. I urge security agencies, particularly the Army and Police, to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face justice,” Kama stated. He also called on community members to avoid retaliatory action, emphasizing that maintaining order is crucial.
The tragedy has ignited protests among locals, who took to the streets and blocked the main highway that connects the region to neighboring Abia and Imo States, expressing their frustration and demanding immediate justice. “I was traveling from Abia when I found the road blocked. I had to take an alternative route because the protesters were unwilling to clear the way,” recounted one traveler who witnessed the demonstration.
This tragic event is the latest in a series of violent attacks across Ebonyi State, which has been plagued by incidents of unrest. Community leaders and residents are urging a swift government response to restore peace and ensure the safety of rural dwellers.
