Gunmen Kill 10 in Anambra Community Attack

At least 10 people were killed on Monday evening in Ogboji, a community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, after gunmen launched a deadly assault on residents attending a community meeting. The attackers, who reportedly arrived in two SUVs, opened fire around 6 p.m., targeting a gathering of indigenes from Ebonyi State who were holding their regular monthly meeting.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen accused the group of organizing a meeting “against them,” seized their minutes book, and began shooting without provocation. The association’s president, Chigozie Nweke, described the killings as senseless and called for better protection of residents, especially non-natives living in the state.

In recent weeks, similar episodes have included the killing of a man and abduction of another in separate incidents, the kidnapping of the state director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the murder of four family members in Ihiala. In April, gunmen attacked a vigilante office in Amesi, also in Orumba South, killing several people and burning the facility.

While the Nigerian government frequently attributes these attacks to the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the group has consistently denied any involvement.
