Gunmen Kidnap Two FRSC Officers Along Abakaliki-Enugu Highway
In yet another brazen attack along the Abakaliki-Enugu federal highway, gunmen have abducted two officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), raising concerns about the safety of commuters in the region.
The affected stretch of the highway, particularly around Nkalagu in Ebonyi and Idodo in Enugu, has witnessed a surge in abductions by armed assailants, plunging travelers into a state of fear and uncertainty.
Confirming the incident, the sector commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi, Henry Igwe, disclosed that the abduction occurred on March 8. Igwe revealed that the abducted officers had completed their duties at the Nkalagu office and were en route to Enugu when they were forcefully taken captive.
According to Igwe, the families of the abducted officers have been contacted by the kidnappers, who are demanding ransom for their release. Efforts to secure the safe return of the officers are underway, with both the families and the FRSC organization engaged in negotiations with the perpetrators.
Despite concerted efforts, the fate of the abducted officers remains uncertain, as there has been no confirmation of their well-being or whereabouts. The FRSC has escalated the matter by formally reporting it to relevant security agencies and is coordinating closely with law enforcement to ensure a swift resolution.
Responding to concerns about the government’s response, Ebonyi Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Jude Okpor, emphasized the collaborative efforts between affected states to address the security challenges plaguing the region.
Meanwhile, DSP Joshua Ukandu, the police public relations officer in Ebonyi, urged families of victims to promptly report such incidents to the police command for appropriate action. While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Ukandu assured commuters of the police’s commitment to maintaining safety on the highway, particularly through the deployment of safer highway teams.
As the authorities intensify efforts to combat insecurity along the Abakaliki-Enugu highway, travelers are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant to mitigate the risks posed by criminal elements operating in the area.
