Chaos in Benin as Vehicle Kills FRSC Marshal, Driver During Rescue Operation
A rescue operation turned deadly on Thursday when a vehicle crashed into emergency responders along the Benin-Ore Road, killing a marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and an unidentified driver.
The incident occurred at the Oviogie axis in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. According to the FRSC Edo State Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew, an earlier road accident had drawn marshals and other emergency workers to the scene.
Mathew said that while responders were attending to victims of the first crash, another vehicle rammed into the accident site.
“The impact of the second crash led to the death of an FRSC marshal involved in the rescue effort and a driver who was present at the scene,” he told journalists in Benin City on Friday.
Tensions escalated shortly after the second collision, as some commercial drivers reportedly confronted FRSC personnel. Witnesses said the situation became volatile, with some motorists blaming the corps for the accident.
The disturbance contributed to heavy traffic along the busy Benin-Lagos Road, leaving commuters and transport operators stranded for several hours.
A commercial driver who identified himself as Iyobor linked the initial crash to trucks allegedly parked along the expressway near the FRSC office. He claimed that similar incidents had occurred in the past, resulting in fatalities and vehicle damage.
Authorities had yet to respond directly to the allegation as of the time of filing this report.
