Guardian Accused of Blinding 13-Year-Old Girl with Laptop Cord in Imo; Victim Rescued, Hospitalized
A 13-year-old girl, Favour Nuhu, has been rescued and hospitalized after she was allegedly beaten by her guardian, leaving her with a serious injury to her right eye. The incident occurred in Owerri, the Imo State capital, and has sparked outrage after a video of the battered girl went viral on social media.
According to reports, Favour was assaulted with a laptop cord by her 30-year-old guardian, identified as Mrs. Joyce Onyinye. The attack reportedly left the teenager unable to see with her right eye, which medical experts now fear may be permanently damaged.
The case came to light after the young girl appeared in a video online, visibly bruised and pleading with the public not to report her to her guardian, fearing further abuse. The footage quickly gained attention and prompted swift intervention from the Stand For Humanity Foundation, a local human rights group.
Chidiebube Okeoma, founder of the foundation, confirmed that the organization received alerts from concerned residents and worked with the Imo State Police Command to locate and rescue the girl. She was immediately taken to the Imo State University Medical Centre in Owerri for urgent medical attention.
“Preliminary examinations show that the child has lost vision in her right eye due to the severity of the injury,” Okeoma said, adding that the foundation is committed to ensuring justice is served and that the victim receives full rehabilitation.
The Imo State Police Command is reportedly investigating the case, and the guardian is expected to face legal action. Meanwhile, the incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and tougher penalties for guardians who abuse minors.
