Governors Give Conditions for Implementing New National Minimum Wage

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has expressed that any new national minimum wage must be financially feasible for all states. The forum released a communiqué after a virtual meeting, stating that while discussions on a new minimum wage are underway, it remains “a work in progress.”

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, who chairs the NGF, noted that while various wage-related initiatives, such as partial salary adjustments, have been implemented, the 37-member tripartite committee tasked with reviewing the national minimum wage is still in consultation and has not yet reached a final decision.

The NGF is closely examining the financial capacities of individual states to ensure that any new minimum wage can be sustainably implemented. This includes a thorough review of each state’s fiscal situation and the potential impacts of the committee’s recommendations.

In addition to wage discussions, the governors also agreed to consider proposals from the National Summit on Justice, focusing on legal amendments and policies aimed at strengthening the justice sector.

Further details on the minimum wage discussions are expected as the tripartite committee progresses with its consultations. The NGF has reaffirmed its commitment to a balanced approach, ensuring that any new wage policies are both fair to workers and economically viable for state governments.
