Political Power Struggle Over Rivers State Treasury – Dele Momodu Explains Rift Between Wike and Fubara

Renowned journalist and publisher Dele Momodu has provided insights into the ongoing conflict between Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. According to Momodu, the core issue behind their political rivalry is control over the Rivers State treasury.

In a recent interview on Channels TV’s “Politics Today,” the veteran journalist and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader shed light on the escalating tension between Fubara and Wike. He revealed that the struggle for dominance in Rivers State has impacted not only the state’s political landscape but also its local governance structures, including the State House of Assembly, local government leadership, and various state commissioners, who have aligned themselves with opposing sides.

The conflict between Fubara and Wike has been brewing since Fubara took office on May 29, 2023, with both sides seeking to consolidate power and influence within the state. This turmoil prompted President Bola Tinubu to intervene and mediate a peace accord between the rival factions, with both parties agreeing to a truce. However, despite the signed peace pact, the conflict has continued in a quieter, but equally potent, manner.

When asked about the cause of the dispute, Momodu explained: “They are fighting in Rivers because of politics only. They also need the money in Rivers. Tinubu has Wike in Rivers. They want him also to get hold of the state to not only give them votes but a structure of money, structure of having direct access to the treasury. Rivers State plays an important role in elections in Nigeria.”
