Governor Okpebholo Vows to Probe Exclusion of 14 Lawmakers from Edo State Assembly
Edo State’s newly inaugurated governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced the establishment of a panel of inquiry to investigate the controversial exclusion of 14 elected lawmakers from the state assembly’s seventh session. This issue has stirred public concern over the strength and integrity of the state’s democratic institutions.
In his inaugural address on Tuesday, Okpebholo emphasized his administration’s commitment to democracy and governance, asserting that the inquiry would ensure transparency and accountability. The governor also presented a five-point agenda designed to address pressing issues in security, infrastructure, healthcare, food security, and education.
Setting a firm tone on security, Okpebholo declared, “Our citizens’ safety is a top priority. To achieve this, we shall implement initiatives outlined in my five-point agenda, all aimed at fostering economic growth and enhancing quality of life for the people of Edo State.”
Central to his infrastructure agenda is a plan to improve the state’s deteriorating road network. “The deplorable condition of our roads has hindered movement across the state,” he stated, promising swift action to improve road connectivity and support economic mobility.
Further, Okpebholo pledged to support local businesses and market traders with accessible soft loans, aiming to revitalize Edo’s economy. In education, he outlined plans to hire additional teachers, renovate schools, and enhance higher education standards. He also pledged skills development programs to empower the state’s youth.
On power, Okpebholo committed to expanding electricity access for rural communities. He also affirmed his administration’s support for the Oba of Benin’s custodianship of repatriated cultural artifacts, a matter of significant historical importance to the state.
In closing, Governor Okpebholo highlighted his intention to work closely with the judiciary and legislature, reinforcing his commitment to upholding democratic values and governance in Edo State.
